History of Skokie
In the 1800s, Skokie was a land of swamps and forests, full of roaming wild animals. In fact, the name “Skokie” is the Potawatomi word for “marsh.” As settlers arrived, vegetable farms, greenhouses, and saloons made up much of the town. After WWII, a large amount of fleeing Jewish people settled there, creating the largest Jewish population in the Chicago area at the time. Today, 30% of Skokie citizens are Jewish! The Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center is located in Skokie, built to “Remember the Past and Transform the Future” by preserving the legacy of the Holocaust.
